The parent company of the Leboncoin site, the Norwegian group Adevinta, bought the classified ad sites of the American giant eBay for more than 8 billion euros. If the Adevinta group becomes the number one classified ad site in the world, Leboncoin, in France, remains its most profitable subsidiary.

Auction site seeks to sell off subsidiaries to refocus on its core business: this classified ad that eBay could have placed did not leave the Norwegian group Adevinta indifferent. The parent company of the site Leboncoin announced Tuesday, July 21 that it will buy the classified ad sites of the U.S. giant, for $ 9.2 billion (about 8 billion euros).

Already present in some fifteen countries, Adevina will add new classified ad sites to its portfolio, including the acquisition of Gumtree, which claims to be the leader in Great Britain, and Kijiji, established in several countries and particularly active in Canada. EBay, for its part, retains its main activity, that of online auction sales.

The group was born out of a split last year, when its parent company, the Norwegian media group Schibsted, decided to turn it into a separate company valued at more than 6 billion euros, but retaining the majority of the capital.

The success of Leboncoin

Among the group’s assets, the Leboncoin site is at the top of the list, accounting for nearly half of the group’s revenue. Launched in 2006, the French online advertising site quickly became the benchmark for transactions, first between private individuals and then with professionals.

On Tuesday 10 July, the site’s counter announced no less than 32 million online ads in categories as different as used cars for sale, new and second-hand decorative objects, holiday home rentals and job offers, and 800,000 new ads would be posted every day.

30 million visitors per month

With such a large audience, the site is France’s number one for both car sales and real estate and is also one of the largest providers of job offers, ensuring that “800,000 French people will have found a job thanks to Leboncoin in 2018”.
